Estimate GPA from a percentage
Percentage-to-GPA conversions vary between institutions. Use this optional linear estimate only when it suits your needs; it is not an official conversion table.
How is GPA calculated?
GPA is commonly calculated by multiplying each course's grade-point value by its credit hours, adding the results and dividing by the total credits included in the calculation.
GPA = Total (Grade points × Course credits) ÷ Total course credits
Cumulative GPA = (Previous GPA × Previous credits + Current grade points earned) ÷ (Previous credits + Current credits)
Example: Suppose you earn 4.0 in a 3-credit course and 3.0 in a 2-credit course. Your total grade points are (4.0 × 3) + (3.0 × 2) = 18. Your GPA is 18 ÷ 5 = 3.60.
Frequently asked questions
What is a GPA on a 4.0 scale?
A 4.0 scale is a grading system used by many institutions, where grade-point values generally range from 0 to 4. The exact mapping between letter grades and points varies by university.
How do I calculate cumulative GPA?
Multiply your previous GPA by the credits already included in that GPA. Add the grade points earned in your new courses, then divide by the total previous and new credits included in the GPA.
Do credit hours affect GPA?
Yes. In a credit-weighted GPA, a course with more credits has more influence on the result than a course with fewer credits.
Can I convert a percentage to GPA?
You can calculate an estimate, but there is no single universal conversion formula. Universities may use grade boundaries, letter grades or their own official conversion tables.
Why might my university GPA differ from this result?
Your university may use a different grade scale, rounding policy, credit weighting, repeat-course policy or rules for excluded courses. Always use the official transcript or institutional GPA policy when accuracy is essential.
