How to calculate concrete volume
Measure the dimensions of your structure, choose the correct unit, and enter a waste allowance if required. The calculator converts your dimensions to metres before calculating the volume.
Volume = Length × Width × Thickness or Depth
Volume = π × (Diameter ÷ 2)² × Height
Recommended volume = Calculated volume × (1 + Waste percentage ÷ 100)
1 m³ = 35.3147 ft³
1 m³ = 1.3080 yd³
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate concrete for a slab?
Multiply the slab's length by its width and thickness. Convert all dimensions to the same unit before multiplying. For example, a slab 10 m long, 5 m wide and 0.15 m thick requires 7.5 m³ before any waste allowance.
How many cubic yards of concrete do I need?
Calculate the volume in cubic metres and multiply by approximately 1.30795 to convert it to cubic yards. Include a suitable waste allowance where appropriate.
What waste allowance should I use?
The appropriate allowance depends on the project, site conditions, formwork, ground preparation and delivery arrangements. The default 5% is an estimate, not a universal construction requirement. Confirm the allowance with your project specifications or supplier.
Does this calculator estimate cement bags?
No. It calculates the volume of concrete required. Estimating cement, sand and aggregate requires a specified concrete mix design or mix ratio, material properties and an appropriate allowance for yield and wastage.
Can I use this calculator for foundations?
Yes, for rectangular footings and cylindrical foundation piers with the dimensions entered. Irregular shapes, stepped foundations and complex structures may need to be divided into simpler shapes and calculated separately.
